We Create* Wolverhampton Set-up
25th January 2010

The shop and design studio was set-up under the Government's 'Empty Shops Revival Plan' iniciative with the help and support of Wolverhampton City Centre Company, Wolverhampton City Council, the Department of Communities and Local Government, and Hortons Estates.
We Create* generated £20 000+ in-kind help and support to secure and set-up the new shop and incubation space and £5000+ funding. We Create* managed to beg, steal, and borrow a range of fixtures, fittings, equipment, and facilites from rolling cages, pallets, counters, peg board, to fire extingishers in 6months.
The new shop and design studio allows We Create* to scale-up its initial Birmingham retail opperation 3-4 times the size and add the design space facility to help and support more local young designers, illustrators, and creatives.
The design studio allows local young designers, illustrators, and creaties to develop designs for retail and run fashion and design-based businesses. BBCC want do something good and to give back to local community. For BBCC's debut show, they are raising money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital - 'The Red Balloon Appeal’ (Registered Charity Number: 1074850).
Everyone involved in producing and participating in the BBCC show will be unpaid volunteers.
BBCC say
It’s going to a MASSIVE charity event taking place on Bank Holiday Sunday 2nd May, at the Birmingham Conservatoire (next to Central Library) from midday until 9.30pm in the evening.
The fundraiser is all in aid of the Birmingham Children’s Hospital and it’s a lot do with putting a spotlight on a multicultural and vibrant Birmingham.
On the day, you’ll be entertained with showgirls, pampered at the Beauty Hall and treating yourself to a spot of retail therapy at the Fashion Hall. Here fashion stylists can advise you on What’s Hot & What’s Not this season…We’re even thinking about a Wardrobe Swap Shop so watch this space. To top it all off, there will be Fashion Catwalk & Auction from 6.30pm onwards. There are limited places available for this- tickets will be available at Bar Risa (Broad St) in April.
And if fashion isn’t your bag- there’ll also be a Jobs Fair to help those seeking employment or get advice. Aside from the Catwalk show, all areas are free entry to the public.
As the second largest city - Birmingham seems to lack a lot of the creative opportunities that other cities hold - especially for young people. Here we’re creating our own opportunity in this event - supporting students, young graduates, local businesses and the local community, whilst fundraising for a fantastic local charity- the BCH.
It’s not just fashion designers and models that we’re after …
*Corporate sponsorships for companies are available
*Local boutiques can showcase their collections on the Catwalk
*Traders are wanted for both the Fashion & Beauty Halls
* Local employers can also take a stand at the Jobs Fair
This all-day event will help bring the local community and local businesses together- everyone involved in participating and producing the show are unpaid volunteers pooling their skills together for a worthy cause.

We Create* Swap Shop Event
24th May 2010
The We Create* shop will be closing in Wolverhampton at the end of June, so we want to make this period a memorable experience to you all. We would like to invite you to a series of workshops and a clothing swap shop event.
It is going to be a space for open-minded, creative and enivironmentally conscious people to meet, make friends and have lots of fun! Find the event on Facebook.
The Swap Shop will take place on Saturday, 29 May 2010, 1pm - 4pm. The shop is located at 42 Victoria Street, Wolverhampton, WV1 3PJ. Here is where we are located on googlemaps.
The Swap Shop is an absolutely FREE event, to which everyone interested in refreshing their wardrobe is welcome. Bring and invite your friends!
Rules:
Take a bit of time to purge your wardrobe prior to our event. Unused stuff clutters your life. Make space for new-to-you pieces that you actually WILL wear.
Swappable items include quality wardrobe items that you'd typically donate. Items must be:
1. New, nearly new (worn only once or twice) or gently used (worn, but still in very good condition);
2. Clean (freshly laundered and pressed);
3. You can bring: coats, dresses, skirts, suits, trousers, jeans, tops, blouses, sweaters, tee-shirts, work-out wear, costumes, shoes, purses, jewellery, belts, hats, watches;
4. Bring as many items as you want and take as many as you like!
5. DO NOT bring dirty or damaged clothes;
6. Unclaimed items will be donated to various charity shops in the area and re-used during our series of workshops (see another leaflets, posters and zine available at We Create shop).
Why bother?
1. Promote ecological lifestyle in accordance with the 3R rule
2. Don't shop - swap! Why spending money when you can get new clothes for free?
3. Meet new people, relax, have fun and tidy your wardrobe as you always wanted!

We Create* Swap Shop
30th May 2010
The We Create* Swap Shop PARTY held on Saturday 29th May at the shop and design studio in Wolverhampton went well and we had fun despite the rain!
Around 30+ peoples poped in for some swap shopping for FREE food and beer. The event was held to start off the series of We Create* re-new workshops running from the Saturday 5th June - Sunday 27th June.
The PARTY was also a bit of a goodbye for the project in Wolverhampton as the empty unit we were granted off Wolverhampton City Centre Company and Wolverhampton City Council as part of the governments Empty Shops Revival Plan has been let and are being booted out end of June - no PARTY!
We wish the new tenants good luck and hope they have as much fun as we've had!

Rich in City Centre Matters
1st June 2010
Rich and the We Create* shop was feature in the Wolverhampton City Centre Company summer newsletter issue six that's distributed to the public and retailers in the city centre.

The article reads
Enterprising Ways of Using Shops
As part of the Department of Communities and Local Government 'Empty Shops' initiative, WCCC worked with social entreprenuer Richard Leighton to set up an inspiring shop.

We Create* is running a project with Age UK in Wolverhampton.
The project is to set-up and run a pop-up shop retailing bits n bobs created by craft-based groups around the area to raise awareness and funds to support the groups.
The pop-up shop also aims to run a number of intergenerational workshops where young people can learn traditional craft-based skills from people connected to the project.

And Now Wee Q and A's
15th February 2011
What are yours & the designers full name? What is you role?
My name is Jonny Deacon. Everything! Ha - however I do have an incredible support from my family who will double check everything.
What inspired you to design your own collection? Did you have any formal training?
Being skint! Having no money and wanting to be creative makes you work +12hr days to realise your dreams. The year before launch was incredibly difficult as I found myself doing ridiculous hours and once home finishing at 1am most nights to develop the collection and the business as a whole; no days off.
Most of East London population have degrees in fashion/film/media/ but I've had no formal training. I picked up loads of advice from colleges. Working at All Saints, one of the leading high street premium brands help. You raise your game pretty quickly. I constantly asked questions from people in every department (patten cutting, design, production, press, customer service etc). It was a crash course in the level you have to reach to be distinctive on the high street which is where I envisage ANW one day. Overall I learned the most from the mistakes they were making and it gave me the confidence that it doesn't matter how large the label / brand its all relative and the same mistakes get made just on a much bigger scale! You have to get the basic operations and planning right from the start which stuck with me.
The collection evolved out of practicality and gaps in my wardrobe more than anything else. There is no need to pay £100 for a basic v-neck? I looked at my friends who are all stylish and individual but share the same common attribute of dressing subtly. Im obsessed with being subtle, from Jewellery to shoes, being understated is an important brand value for ANW. The collection as a whole is based on the essentials for primarily 20/30 but even +40 something men that need good quality garments that will last. The graphics lay a platform to be slightly more expressive, adventurous and playful.
You don't have to be amazing at everything as you can outsource, but you have to be able to identify what your crap at, otherwise you'll struggle to get the label off the ground.

Was it difficult to find manufactures?
Yes but you just get on with it and look at all options. ANW is a small menswear brand but we have huge ambition. The bigger picture has always taken fore front. Currently everything is produced in the UK and US, out with our Shirts (China). In two years we will look at Portugal, Turkey, and China when the brand is stable and can warrant it.
What has been the most challenging aspect of starting a new label?
Funding and cash flow. I am very lucky in many respects as my Family have loaned me the start-up cash but at a rate they will see a fair return. The major downside to this is lending from loved ones and that has added different pressures. I found out very early that I needed control over everything which suited my personality, I get easily frustrated when people don't give 100%. Obviously partnerships share the burdens of funding and work load which is great but it wasn't for me. Also I have a fantastic accountant and bookkeeper which if you set up as a limited company is essential, well it was for me.

Can you tell me more about your T-shirts?
They are meant to be fun and provocative. There is a heavy reference to the monarchy, in particular the queen. I think the queen would be a nice lady to meet so its not personal, just an idea to mix things up. Historic twists have been a large centre piece to collection with our Shakespeare being a huge seller. In no particular order the brands idols are David Bowie, Steve McQueen and Tom Petty. The brand definitely leans to 2/3 British flair and a 1/3 American Vintage which is probably an expression of the latter idols. These guys either set the scene or ended it respectively. Whether they feature in future collections is another thing altogether.
Currently all our tees are a white canvas, and will probably stay that way for a while. Its a sheer jersey 100% cotton, vintage washed that lies slim and soft to the skin. They are high quality and fantastic for screening.
There is no escaping that fact that for most start-up labels the T-Shirt allows the best platform to launch your ideas and uniqueness and many labels have done well with this as their centre piece. ANW balances this with a focus on the brand as a whole, which will always remain our priority.

Forgotten-vintage have teamed up with two of Birmingham's best known charities SIFA FIRESIDE and REACH THE PEOPLE CHARITY. Between the three parties they want to create a brand to rival some of the biggest names in vintage in the UK.
To create this brand Forgotten Vintage is setting up a shop within the city centre of Birmingham, a studio, an office and warehouse, as well as sending Forgotten Vintage to festivals and other massive events.

All of the volunteers involvement will be documented and will look amazing on CV's and portfolios.
The TUESDAY 14th NOVEMBER 2011 meeting meeting is a chance for people interested in helping support the project to meet a representative from both charities and Forgotten Vintage to ask any questions you might have, for us to tell you a little more about what we do, and to work out how we can help each other.
Please get in touch to confirm you are attending Tuesday's meeting or if you have any questions.
Hopefully see you on TUESDAY 14th NOVEMBER.
